Home Security Tips
House break and enters are one of the most common crimes. In many instances house break-ins are crimes of opportunity with entry gained through an open or unlocked door or window.
Good home security is as simple as the following three basic steps:
- Make it as difficult as possible for an offender to gain entry i.e. install and use key operated locks on doors and windows, don’t place keys under door mats or in obvious places.
- Make it as difficult as possible for an offender to exit with your property i.e. use the key-operated locks on doors and windows, make sure alarms are functioning.
- Make it as difficult as possible for an offender to want to steal your property i.e. engrave or microdot all items of value.
Property owners can greatly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a burglary by implementing measures to improve the security of their home. These measures can be simple and don’t necessarily need to cost a lot of money. For example:
- Get to know your neighbours. Exchange telephone numbers and keep and eye on each other’s homes. Observant neighbours can reduce prowling, loitering and burglary by reporting suspicious people or vehicles to police.
- Join your local Neighbourhood Watch group.
- Even when you are at home, be aware of your home security and ensure doors and windows are secured, particularly in areas that are unoccupied.
- Before you hire a professional house cleaner or gardener, check all references thoroughly.
- Secure your home when you leave by locking all doors and windows. Many burglars simply enter through an unlocked door or window. Remove keys from internal doors and windows when you are not at home.
- If you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed immediately and tell your neighbours that it's been repaired. Many people ignore an alarm that goes off regularly.
- Ask for credentials from all salespersons who request entry to your home. If you're doubtful, check with the person's office before letting him or her in.
- Give your home the “lived in” look when you’re out by leaving a light on and the radio playing. Timing devices are effective for this. When you are not at home, adjust the ringing volume down on your telephone so it is not obvious the home is unoccupied.
- Keep cash, keys and valuables out of sight and out of easy reach.
- Don’t leave notes on the door as they suggest that no one is home.
- Don’t leave a house key under the door mat or a pot plant, in the letterbox or in other obvious places.
- Ensure you house/unit number is clearly visible so it can be located quickly in an emergency.
- Mark valuable property using the Property Identification System.
- Know which doors and windows you can use as an exit in an emergency so you can leave quickly and safely.
- In an emergency always ring triple zero (000). Use the speed dial of your telephone to record other important numbers.
If you do hear an intruder in the home, don’t risk injury. Dial triple zero (000) at the earliest opportunity, leave the house immediately and go to a neighbour or somewhere safe to contact and wait for police.
If you come home and find your home broken into, report it to police and do not touch anything. Forensic evidence can easily be destroyed and it is important for police to see your home exactly as it was left to obtain evidence.

Central Coast - Gosford Shire - CRIME STATISTICS REPORTED
It is very important to have security these days with the crime rates around. Sad. But true! And unfortunately they are on the rise. Where have the days gone of leaving the home unlocked and letting the kids play on the street until dark??
It is best to be on top of the bad people. Lock up and stay safe before its to late.
We highly recommend having a dog if you can, as they are great for letting you know when someone is lurking around the home.
We also recommend a security system to protect you when you are all tucked up in bed. If someone quietly slid a window or door open, having window and door sensors set in stay mode will alarm you and the intruder to get out quick. And more often than not a burglar will see an alarm siren or window stickers and move onto the next home where they are less likely to be caught.
We currently have a promotion going for a security system "The Protector Series" package, fully installed for only $599.00. 2yrs Warranty, NO contracts, self-monitor. Check it out here...
The Brisbane Water NSW Police Force are very informative in letting us know what's happening with crimes around the Gosford Shire. We will post these on our facebook page for you to follow if interested. Click here to go to our facebook page and be sure to click "like" to stay in the loop.

Why you should have a home security system installed.
Home Security Alarm Systems Provide Peace of Mind
Having your own home security alarm system in your home can provide peace of mind. We live in a consumer driven society, and it is important that we protect our stuff. Owning a home security alarm system will notify the authorities when an intruder enters your home when you are present or away.

It does not matter if one lives in suburbia or in the downtown of a city, crime happens everywhere. By having a home security alarm system, the knowledge in and of itself that your home is protected will grant you and your family peace of mind.
Home Security Alarm Systems Provide Safety
It is clear that owning a home security alarm system provides safety in your home. The last place that one should have to worry about his or her own safety is in the own home. In addition to detecting intruders, most home security alarm systems can be hooked up to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

There are generally one push buttons on a home security alarm system keypad for contacting the police, fire station, and poison control. These additional features of a home security alarm system provide additional safety to one's home.
Home Security Alarm Systems Can Lower Your Homeowner's Insurance

Pros & Cons of Central (ducted) Vacuums
Central (ducted) vacuum systems are the end-all in today's modern world. No more dragging out a vacuum cleaner and all the accessories every time you need to spruce up, stronger suction power. What household wouldn't like that? Here are the ins and outs of central vacuum systems.
What is a Central (ducted) Vacuum System?
- A central vacuum system (central vac) enables the homeowner to plug the hose of the system into an outlet in the wall; the actual vacuum is powered from the outlet and is usually installed in the garage or basement. The suction comes from the power unit; you plug in the hose and flick a switch to turn on the vacuum. The outlets are installed throughout the house so all you need to do is move the hose--no more stretching a power cord to its limit.
The dirt and debris is sucked through the filtration system and empties into a fairly large container, which doesn't have to be emptied after every vacuuming session. There are two basic types of central vacs--a vacuum system or a "cyclone" system that uses gravity and centrifugal force.
Why Consider a Central Vacuum System?
- If you have less than 1000 square feet, a central vac is not worth the money. If you have all hardwood floors, probably not. If you have a dog or cat that sheds, definitely get a central vac. A regular vacuum cleaner requires you to drag out the entire vacuum cleaner every time you need to tidy up. There is usually a canister to either empty or a bag to toss after every job, which can become old very fast.
A central vac only requires you to pull out a hose, plug it into an outlet in the wall and use when and where you need it. Simply put the hose back when you're done.
The Pros
-
The number one reason to add central vac to your home is that it immediately increases the value of your home. It may cost a little bit to install, but you will get that and more back, even if your system is several years old. Central vac systems typically vacuum with three to five times the power of a conventional vacuum cleaner. Which means, stronger suction and a much more productive vacuum in half the time. You may need to vacuum less often because of the power of a central vac system, and a central vac cleans deeper.
There are no cords Professional installers show you where you to place the outlets for the best efficiency. You simply move the hose from place to place as you vacuum without dragging the vacuum cleaner and cord around.
Central vac systems mean healthier air for your lungs. The dirt and debris is carried away to the main unit which is located in the basement or garage instead of into the air. For people suffering from allergies or asthma, this is a huge factor.

The Cons
-
Central vac systems are usually a bit more pricey than a great well known Brand conventional vacuum (although these days you would probably find the costs not to far apart) and generally require professional installation. The pipes must be installed out of sight, usually in walls and under floors. This can be an expensive addition to the price of the vacuum system. Central vac systems are generally not cost efficient for small areas.
Installation of central vac systems doesn't make sense for renters unless the landlord will pay for 100 percent of the cost--after all, the installation of central vac adds to the value of the landowner's property. Finally, be aware that the hose for a central vac system is quite long, so storage could be an issue.

Weighing In
-
Choosing between a conventional vacuum cleaner or a central vacuum system is both a financial and personal decision. There can be no ignoring the cost of the central vac system, as it is usually at least $700.00 -- before installation costs. For some, financial matters take a back seat to personal matters; if you have asthma or allergies, the cost may be easily justified. If you have hardwood floors and no pets, a central vacuum system may not, however, make sense.
We do promise you though, once you use a ducted vacuum system you will never want to go back!

How to prevent your home getting broken into!
Help STOP House Break-Ins
A large number of break and enter crimes are easily preventable. By introducing a number of simple and inexpensive changes to your home, you can play an active role in reducing the chances of this happening to you. By securing your home you significantly lower the risk of you and your family becoming victims of crime. Burglary can have a serious impact on families and individuals in a number of different ways.
- Display street number at the front of the house to assist emergency services to locate your home;
- Ensure all perimeter fences are in good order and that gates are kept closed and locked to restrict unauthorised access to your property;
- Trim trees and shrubs from around doors and windows so as not to provide concealment to intruders and increase visibility to and from the street;
- Install quality security lights around the perimeter of your home to provide more effective illumination at night;
- The power board to your home should be housed within a metal cabinet secured with an electricity authority lock to restrict tampering;
- All perimeter doors to your home should be of solid construction and fitted with quality dead lock sets to restrict unauthorised access to the home;
- All perimeter windows should be secured with key operated locks to restrict unauthorised access;
- Glass within doors and windows should be reinforced by either adhering a shatter resistant film, replacing with laminated glass or having quality metal security grilles or shutters fitted to restrict unauthorised access;
- Record descriptions, models and serial numbers of all your valuables to assist in easy identification should they be reported lost or stolen;
- Engrave your driver’s licence number prefixed by the initials “NSW” on all items of value again to assist in easy identification;
- Photograph jewellery and other collectables for easy identification.
- Consider having a monitored intruder alarm system installed. Obtain at least three quotes from licensed security companies;
- Garages should be locked to restrict access. Roller tilt and panel lift doors can be secured with additional lock sets in the form of hasp and staple or padlocks;
- Garden sheds should be securely anchored to the ground to prevent lifting. A suitable lock set should also be fitted;
- Garden tools, equipment and ladders should be locked away when not in use to prevent them being used to gain access to your home.

Hunter burglary rate rises
A WORRYING return to higher rates of burglaries across the Hunter has prompted the state's top crime statistician to warn that the issue "needs to be jumped on pretty quickly".
Crime statistics unveiled Wednesday revealed there were 656 more break and enters across the region in the year to March compared to the same period to March 2012.
Port Stephens local government area rocketed to 19th in the state for burglaries after recording 211 more than the 444 break and enters committed in the two years to March, 2012.
It surged past the 558 through to March 2011 or the 615 recorded in the year to March, 2010.
"There is no seasonal reason for that and considering the Hunter is already 30 per cent above the state rate, it is a problem that needs to be jumped on pretty quickly," NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research Dr Don Weatherburn said.
"But other than that, the rest of the figures for the Hunter are not too bad - I have certainly seen far worse."
Gloucester was the only local government area to record a decrease in home burglaries compared to the year before, although it appears many areas were returning to the high crime rates of the past.
Newcastle topped the region with 1357 burglaries , up from 1280 in the year to March 2012.
Lake Macquarie has continued to grow from 829 to 964 last year and 1153 in the past 12 months.
Maitland recorded 444 compared to 354 the year previous.
Dr Weatherburn warned a 17.9 per cent increase in domestic assaults across the Hunter was because of seasonal impacts and did not necessarily point to a larger problem "even though domestic violence continues to be a major issue".
Newcastle local government area experienced a 20 per cent increase in domestic assaults and a 36.5 per cent rise in reports of indecent assault, from 156 to 213.
